Fairy Garden Party—
A Celebration of Blooming Wildflower Style

While many brands are reaching their 10-year mark at Copenhagen Fashion Week, Danish designer Munthe celebrated it’s 30th Anniversary this year with an ethereal runway show. It celebrated in style welcoming over 600 guests to the Bella Centre— where white sheets of paper flowers hung from the soaring ceiling. “So many people want to attend the show, especially in the summertime,” says founder Naja Munthe.

The concept started with a literal seed of an idea. Munthe went to a flea market and “and there was this woman selling flower seeds that she had produced and harvested in her own garden,” says Munthe. “And I thought it was so nice.”

In the run up to this season, Munthe purchased her own seeds and grew her own flowers in a small window greenhouse. Once the seeds blossomed, the flowers were plucked and arranged by hand against paper to create a one-of-a-kind floral print that became the collection’s signature print, used tonally on white peasant dresses, sweeping skirts and bomber jackets, all while inspiring the blooming white sculptural accents on the runway framing the models in the whimsical ether.

On this overarching motif, Naja Munthe shared, “The concept of ‘planting a seed’ embodies the essence of uncertainty yet signifies both beginnings and endings. Witnessing growth, whether of an idea or a literal seed, is deeply inspiring. This season, my vision was to take inspiration from ‘planting a seed’ and watch it grow, not knowing what the end result would be.”

The show featured looks dripping in milky white lace decorated with decadent, glittery embellishments and couture-style crafted beading. “There’s a lot of handcraft in the collection – very beautiful details and traditional handcraft,” says Munthe, who has noticed that lately, there’s a greater appetite for standout pieces. The silhouettes were flowy and fairy-like—hair worn in woven braids or effortlessly slicked back and nearly wet-looking (harkening back to Mugler). In addition to the elegant occasion options, there was no-fuss denim and everyday tailored separates – a practical wardrobe to mix and match for the growing cult of designer devotees who reach for Munthe for their day-to-day fits. It was once again refreshing to see an inclusive show full of various body types, genders and ages.

And just as Vogue Scandinavia observed — Munthe took her bow, the thunderous applause from her 600 guests proof of just how far the brand has come. “That’s what I wanted to show with this collection,” says Munthe. “You can start with something so small and it’s so easily destroyed, but if you take care of it and you do good and you feed it, it can become something very big and beautiful.”

The runway show was staged at the Bella Centre in the fashion house’s origin city of Copenhagen, featuring garments printed with the handmade floral pattern as well as a vibrant array of colors drawn directly from Munthe’s greenhouse: blues and light yellows, purple, and striking red mimic the vibrant hues of a flower petal, capturing the very essence of spring. The spirit of Munthe is greatly influenced by art, as reflected in the intricate patterns, as organic elements take on the role of the muse. The collection also required meticulous handcrafting to achieve ornate beading patterns and three-dimensional floral designs.
