At Paris Fashion Week, Acne Studios' SS25 collection, under the creative vision of Jonny Johansson, offered a masterful blend of surrealism and domestic inspiration. Johansson explored the theme of "twisted domesticity," transforming everyday household elements into avant-garde fashion pieces that blurred the line between the familiar and the fantastical.

The show’s set played a pivotal role in reflecting Johansson’s theme of “twisted domesticity” — designed by Philadelphia-based artist Jonathan Lyndon Chase, provided a surreal, immersive backdrop. Featuring warped furnishings such as chairs, sofas, and soft sculptures—including sinister plush cats and abstract lamp shapes—Chase's art echoed Johansson’s vision. These topsy-turvy household objects set the stage for a collection that reimagined home life through a surreal, fashion-forward lens. Johansson's question, “Can classic domestic codes be translated into fashion?” found its answer in this playful, alien-inspired interpretation.

On the runway, Johansson manipulated proportions with oversized, sculptural silhouettes and shrunken, almost toy-like designs. Denim, one of Acne Studios’ staple materials, was used in exaggerated proportions, often paired with second-skin tops or blazers worn without shirts, creating a look that felt distinctly otherworldly. The casual jersey pieces were draped across the body in unconventional ways, as though the wearer had dressed hurriedly, adding to the collection’s chaotic yet intentional aesthetic. Retro floral prints and on-trend tartan brought a sense of nostalgia, but with a subversive edge, calling to mind a grandmother whose house smelled of cigarettes and rebellion.

Exaggerated padding in suiting created a funhouse mirror effect and eveningwear had an undone yet sophisticated look, featuring raw hems, unpolished tailoring, and nostalgic knits. Crystal-studded knitwear, inspired by tea cozies and doilies, brought a whimsical, domestic charm to the collection.

The color palette ranged from soft pastels like bubblegum pink and sky blue to richer hues of chocolate and charcoal, balancing comfort and rebellion. Retro floral prints and tartans evoked memories of a chaotic, chain-smoking grandmother’s house, adding a subversive, edgy twist to the collection’s roots in domesticity.

Despite its domestic inspiration, this collection was far from confined to home. Johansson’s twisted housewife figure seemed more likely to tear down suburban norms than to embody them, with looks that begged to be worn out—whether to a club, dinner, or on the streets.

Through this SS25 collection, Johansson showcased his skill in turning the ordinary into something extraordinary. By combining exaggerated proportions, domestic nostalgia, and artistic surrealism, Acne Studios delivered one of the standout collections of Paris Fashion Week.
